Sunglass Hints

We all enjoy the sun of summertime. However too much of anything sometimes isn’t a good thing. Strong glare and reflections from the sun can often put a damper on our sports performance. The best counter punch for this problem is a good pair of sunglasses. Choosing which one is right will depend on the surrounding environment and type of sport being played. To turn our golf enthusiasts into ball hawks we prescribe them polarized sunglasses that have a green or tan tint. The polarization cuts down on glare and the tint color will highlight the greens in order to make the white ball stand out in contrast. To get our tennis players to return serves, we prescribe polarized sunglasses with back side lens surface antireflective coating and a yellow tint. The special antireflective coating cuts down the reflection of the sun on the tennis court and the yellow tint helps to highlight the yellow tennis ball so that it is more readily seen. And to help our fishermen catch the big one, we again prescribe polarized sunglasses. However, the tint chosen will depend on where the fishing is done. In deep waters, grey is favored as this will cut down on the tremendous glare out in open waters. In shallow waters where contrast will be very important to locate fish, brown tints will be favored. Hope these sunglass hints help enhance the fun with your summertime sports. And if you participate in any other sports not mentioned, don’t hesitate to drop by our office to learn additional sunglass options.

Multiples Are Multiplying

I’ve noticed a trend – more people are getting multiples. I know, you’re asking what exactly are multiples. By multiples, I mean ‘one of anything’ is no longer the norm. Before you disagree, go ahead and check around the house. You’ll find multiples everywhere. Multiple televisions, multiple computers, multiple watches, multiple shoes, multiple automobiles, and yes, you can probably guess what I am leading to…multiple pairs of eyewear. The one word that can describe the reasoning to this trend is specialization. We are customizing and tailoring things in our lives to match our needs. In other words, we want exceptional products to make our lives more enjoyable. I guess a real life example would fit in nice at this time. Well, the other day I met an interesting fellow. He came in with a pair of progressive bifocals – glasses that can focus at distances both far and near. He commented that those were his dress pair of glasses and that he didn’t think the prescription was strong enough any more in them. He then went on to show me a bag containing all of his other pairs of glasses. Okay, here goes the list of what they were used for: 1. Safety glasses for work. 2. Polarized sunglasses for golfing and fishing. 3. Computer glasses for surfing the internet and working on his accounting software. 4. Reading glasses for magazines and the morning paper. 5. Fun pair of glasses for going out with his kids to baseball games. So after updating his prescription, he happily walked out with a six pack - six pairs of glasses. This seems to happen at such a regular basis each week that it is becoming unusual for a person to just get one pair of glasses anymore. A trend that seems to be multiplying each year because of the baby boomer generation and because more people want to spend their hard earned dollars on their health and vision in order to make their lives better. So if you are finding that your current glasses do not seem right for a current activity that you do often, its best to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist to determine if there is a specialty pair of glasses for your needs.

Crizal Lenses: A Clear New Way Of Seeing

When you are wearing your glasses do you often feel like you are looking through a haze? That your lenses never seem clean or clear enough? Teflon Lenses

Teflon is such an amazing product that its’ discover, Roy J. Plunkett, is in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. By serendipity, Mr. Plunkett was first to recognize Teflon’s unique properties – a substance that is extremely slippery, relatively inert, and stable over a wide range of temperatures. These remarkable characteristics have led to Teflon’s introduction into a wide range of products such as nail polish, racing boat exteriors, Stainmaster carpet cleaner, and of course nonstick bakeware. Eyeglass wearers can also benefit because we now have Teflon Clear Coat Lenses. Not only do you get superior scratch resistant properties, but Teflon Clear Coat Lenses for eyeglasses also have the ability to eliminate reflections allowing a person to see crisper and clearer than with ordinary lenses. Sources of common reflections in our everyday life include automobile headlights, computer monitor screens, fluorescent lights, and video game screens. Cleaning Teflon Clear Coat Lenses is also a cinch because the lenses naturally repel away dust and oils. Fingerprints and dirt will wipe away with ease without the need of any special clothes or cleaners. The downside of Teflon Clear Coat Lenses is its limited availability. It is currently not found in retail optical stores or chains. You can find participating distributors by the familiar Teflon window sticker emblem or by calling your ophthalmologist to find if it is available.

Guide To Picking Eyeglass Frames

I have been noticing that glasses are becoming popular. Kids are jumping for joy when told glasses are needed for them to see clearly. I guess you can blame the Harry Potter craze for that, but I have also noticed adults quickly warming up to the trend. They are getting multiple pairs for different aspects of their life such as work, sporting activities, and formals. People are finding that glasses are a wonderful way to make them appear more attractive and appropriate for occasions. With all the many frames out there, it can be a daunting task to pick the right ones for you. Fortunately, there are a few basic principles that can help in the selection process. The first thing to consider is shape of frame. The usual rule is to pick a frame that contrasts with the shape of your face. For instance, a person with a round face would look nice with rectangular frames. Likewise, oval frames would look appealing on a person with a square face. If you are unsure of your face shape, just check to see whether a round frame or a square frame looks good on you and then proceed with frames consisting of variations of the better looking shape. The next thing to consider is color of frame. The easiest thing to do is try on a neutral brown frame. Then go with lighter or darker shades depending on which goes better with your skin complexion, hair, and eyes. Introduce colors such as plum or soft green if you want to go for a youthful or fashionable appearance. Lastly, consider your lifestyle. Are you a conservative businessman who needs wire or semi-rimless frames. Or are you a soccer mom that wants to look nice in a pair of multicolored plastic frames. Maybe you are an artist or student that wants to make a statement with an unusual geometric frame shape. Even retired seniors can get in on the act of fashion by picking uplifting shapes like cat eyes or upsweeping rectangles. Just remember, that nowadays glasses are as much a needed accessory as they are a necessity to see.

Selecting The Correct Sunglasses

If you have outdoor plans this summer, then it’s a nice time to pick up some sun-shades. Sunglasses offer people multiple benefits. Sunglasses comfort vision by reducing glare and improving color contrast. Sunglasses may also protect the eyes. They can serve as a barrier to flying insects and road debris such as for bicyclers and motor-bikers, and they can block out the harmful ultraviolet sun rays that are known to cause cataract formation and skin cancer later in life. If given the choice, prescription sunglasses from an eye physician should be favored over retail sunglasses. The obvious benefit is sight as one’s own prescription is much better than no prescription at all. In addition, the quality and safety of prescription sunglasses are regulated. Polycarbonate lenses should be requested as these lenses not only block out ultraviolet light, but they also tend not to shatter. The color and amount of tint in a sunglass is largely personal preference depending on how sensitive a person may be to light. Gray and brown tints are often chosen because they preserve color perception. Yellow tints are a favorite of sport participants as they are known to sharpen vision. Blue tinted lenses should be avoided as they can transmit blue light which is harmful to the retina of the eye. For those who do not want to carry around more than one pair of glasses, transition sunglasses are a wonderful way to go. The transition lens will darken when a person is outdoors in the sun and will lighten when a person is indoors. So whatever your activity this summer, be it motorcycling, walking, sporting, or gardening, everyone can benefit from wearing sunglasses.

Safe Tips For Sun Fun

Many of us in the area are going to sunny destinations this winter. Like the birds we tend to go where its warm during the winter. As we travel to such places, we have to remember that the sun’s rays are not just harmful to the skin, but are also harmful to the eyes. Intense sunlight can burn the eye in a similar way that it can cause a sunburn on the skin. There is also evidence that prolonged sun exposure to the eyes can contribute to the premature development of eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. To enjoy the sun safely, I recommend certain tips. If you plan on being out in the sun for extended periods, then wear sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Make sure that these sunglasses block 100% of UV rays. For those who can’t make it to sunny destinations, and rather tan in salons, make sure you have protective eye goggles during the procedure.
